Roll-Larm Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
What is Roll-LarmTM?
A:
Roll-Larm is an equine inverted posture alarm. In simple terms, it remotely sounds an alarm when your horse rolls.
Q:
Why is that important?
A:
During foaling, horses tend to roll on their backs as a means to expedite the birthing process. Horses with colic tend to roll on their backs as a means to correct a painful situation.
Q:
Why do I need to be alerted?
A:
The majority of equine births occur at night, when most of us are away from the barn/paddock and often sleeping.
Q:
What is colic?
A:
Colic, in horses, is the condition in which their intestines become twisted and/or blocked. It is a painful and often life-threatening condition that often requires immediate action if the animal is to be saved.
Q:
Why should I suspect that my horse will colic?
A:
It happens to many horses during the course of their lives, but the most at risk are those mares who have recently foaled. The void created by the absence of the newborn foal leaves space for a mare’s intestines to become intertwined.
Q:
Is this product only good for foaling mares?
A:
No. Any horse suspected of or prone to colic are also excellent candidates for Roll-Larm.
Q:
Why is it necessary?
A:
Unfortunately, one of the most dangerous conditions to a pregnant mare and its foal occurs during foaling. Another highly dangerous situation to any horse is colic. Horses have a natural tendency to roll during these times, which would be an ideal time to warn the owner.
Q:
Is it necessary to use the breast collar?
A:
Not in pregnant mares, because their enlarged bellies tend to keep the product in place. For leaner horses suspected of colic, the breast collar should be employed.
Q:
How often does the battery require changing in the transmitter?
A:
With proper storage between uses, a fresh battery should last an entire foaling season (4-5 months).
Q:
Can this product be used with other animals, such as cows, sheep, etc.?
A:
No. This product was designed exclusively for horses.
Q:
Can this product be used for miniature horses or draft horses?
A:
Yes. However, the standard harness may need to be altered. Please inquire about custom-sized harnesses.
Q:
How far away will the transmitter signal reach?
A:
It has been designed with state-of-the-art transceiver components with FCC specifications to transmit 400 feet under ideal conditions.
Q:
What if my barn is further away, or conditions are not ideal?
A:
In this situation, for longer distances or signal transmission barriers (e.g. metal barns), we recommend our Auxiliary Alarm Extension Unit. This will extend the range around barriers and as long as necessary.
